Brittany Howard and Childish Gambino release a velvety version of “Stay High”
Some collaborations are so perfect they seem to have been written in the stars. For Childish Gambino and Brittany Howard, it’s clear some sort of divine intervention brought them together. The two teamed up for a rendition of Howard’s song “Stay High,” which will appear on her upcoming album Jamie Reimagined. The record is a remix compilation of songs from her first album, Jamie, and will be out this Friday, July 23.
A big jump from the original stripped-down version of the song, automatically Glover adds in sweet violins and a bouncy beat. The track is like velvet, its easy flow interrupted only briefly by Glover’s monotone interjections. It feels like the world you escape into when you’re so in love nothing else matters but the other person. Impossible to worry about anything, Howard instead seeks out beauty and sheer joy that surrounds her. While they differ, both versions incorporate twinkling keys, Howard’s smooth soulful vocals, and a sense of celebration.
Jamie Reimagined will also feature BadBadNotGood’s version of “Tomorrow,” as well as contributions from EarthGang, Bon Iver, Little Dragon, Michael Kiwanuka, Syd, and more.
Howard is set to go on tour with My Morning Jacket this fall and will stop in Philadelphia. You can grab tickets here and stream the track below.
