Barney Cortez releases self-produced EP ahead of Sunflower Philly show
Barney Cortez released a new EP, Mother Sun, on August 27th just hours before he plays Sunflower Gardens with MINKA (tickets still available). The three new recordings mark the first self-produced work by Cortez at his studio, The Ambient Church in Fishtown.
Following a string of releases exploring rock and roll in its many forms–from art-punk to glam pop–Mother Sun shows Barney Cortez returning to streetwise indie rock. The poignant “Star Kids” was the leading single off the EP, and a tune that has been in Cortez’s back pocket for months. You can watch Cortez perform “Star Kids” live and stripped down for Unprecedented Sessions, the video series XPN produced in collaboration with Cherry-Veen Zine and PowerCycle Productions.
“Mother Sun is dedicated to Ben Kravitz Major Van Winkle, Tiger Merritt, and Billy Swayze–all my friends who passed recently and can’t be here to share their talents anymore,” says Cortez. You can see Barney Cortez perform songs from the new EP tonight at Sunflower Gardens in North Philly. Tickets and more information are available at the XPN Concert Calendar.
