I’ve seen Sarah Shook & the Disarmers music described in many ways – country punk, outlaw country, twangy rock, Americana – but however you might classify their sound, it’s one hell of a good time. Fresh off their new record Nightroamer, Shook and company leaned heavily on some of their best new songs, showing why here at XPN deemed the band an artist to watch earlier this year.
You got the feeling, as the audience packed in the PRX Stage, that this was just the type of show to kick Thursday night of NON-COMM 2022 into another gear. I’m not saying that the bartenders at World Cafe Live should give Shook and their band a cut of their tips but I’m not not saying it either. This was, to give Sarah Shook & the Disarmers’ music yet another genre, beer-guzzlin’ music at its finest. To be clear, this is very much a compliment, as Shook and their bandmates created an atmosphere of both effortless cool and rugged confidence in a way that easily blended into the audience. If there are a few more hangovers come Friday morning, we might know exactly who to blame.
The set was highlighted by “Been Lovin You,” a standout from Nightroamer whose charms lie in the catharsis whip from loud and soft. Shook, especially, was a powerhouse as they hustle around the stage, an artist to watch to be sure. Listen back to Sarah Shook & The Disarmers’ NON-COMM set below and check out photos from the set.
