After nine years, early 2000s indie trio Yeah Yeah Yeahs returns with new music and announcements of an album and a tour. Their newest song “Spitting Off the Edge of the World” featuring Perfume Genius is fresh and fits right in the 2022 modern rock scene. The reverb-drenched drums and lush synths mix with lead singer Karen O’s wispy, emotionally-charged vocals – especially the hard-hitting chorus where the near-operatic delivery transcends the lyrical content.

The accompanying music video directed by Cody Critcheloe features stunning visuals of neon night club lighting and grimey found footage shots of basement house shows. The voice of Karen’s costar Michael Hadreas of Perfume Genius blends into the dreamy soundscape.

The soon to be released Cool It Down comes after a lull in the group’s music output. “Don’t have to tell you how much we’ve been going through in the last nine years since our last record, because you’ve been going through it too, and we love you and we see you,” said Karen in a press release. The eight-song record is set to release September 30th via Secretly Canadian.

Headlining Los Angeles’ Teragram Ballroom on May 30th, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs previewed four new songs in their set – “Burning,” “Fleez,” “Black Top,” and the new single “Spitting Off the Edge of the World.” This was their first show in three years and it seems like the public is ready for more. Has the pandemic caused a lot of dormant acts to make a return and are we in a new musical renaissance?

Starting June 5, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ tour covers US, UK, and Australia with the closest date at Brooklyn’s Forest Hills Stadium in New York City on October 1.
