The frontperson of Arthur Thomas and The Funkitorium stopped by WXPN Local this week for a guest DJ set and conversation about two major gigs the band has coming up: a tribute to James Brown in the Music Hall of World Cafe Live on Friday, June 17th, as well as his second annual Funktoberfest at Germantown’s Attic Brewing Company on September 23rd and 24th.
Both of those events played into his song selection: the first set focused on The Godfather of Soul, highlighting three songs that Art was particularly excited to rock out with the band to. From there, he played three artists he considers peers in the Philly funk revival: the peppy seven-piece Rhythm Addicts, the ubiquitous marching horns of Snacktime, and the emotive singer-songwriter Carla Gamble.
We also got a first listen to “Summer Time Funk,” the latest single from The Funkitorium, out now. Take a listen below, and find tickets and more information on the concert at the WXPN Concerts and Events page.
