Kurt Vile delivers a wonderful Free At Noon performance
It was a scorcher outside, but Vile delivered cool tunes to help the audience wick off the sweat.
Another Friday rolls around and with it another Free at Noon. This week Kurt Vile gave a laidback solo performance to a packed house. The Philly singer-songwriter has had an extensive career in music and this past spring he released his ninth studio album, (watch my moves). With his goofy demeanor and solid playing he captivated the audience.
Being on stage alone, at a hometown show, with a large audience is one of the most intimidating things a musician can do. But Vile delivered a wonderful performance despite all of this. Vile does not take himself too seriously and it shines through on stage in his music, his remarks between songs. Especially after “Cool Water” when he quipped about how he needs to be careful of his DelCo accent with this song and followed it up with a short acapella version of “Scarborough Fair” by Simon and Garfunkel in an angelic and –at this point infamous– DelCo accent.
Vile started off his set with “Flyin (like a fast train)” from his latest album and followed up with “Song for John in D” where the longer instrumental intro gave Vile a chance to display some of his skills on guitar and wrapped up the song with a solo under a looped guitar backing track.
“Mount Airy Hill (way gone)” is the perfect song for the summer, Vile’s music feels like a laid back beautiful summer day. And the lyrics conjuring imagery of stumbling around the quiet neighborhood of Mount Airy Hill remind you of being young and carefree. Not really caring where you go or what you do.
Switching up instruments Vile hopped on piano for “Goin on a Plane Today” talking about taking a plane and thinking back on his life and what his life holds all tinted by the idea of this plane ride can end “Either on the tarmac or the afterlife”.
Vile wrapped up Free at Noon with his hit “Pretty Pimpin”, an all-around crowd pleaser and solid way to start the rest of your day. It is a scorcher out this Friday but Vile delivered cool tunes to help the audience wick off the sweat.
Starting on October 12 Kurt Vile and The Violators are going on tour with a stop at Phantom Power in Millersville, PA. Tickets on sale now.
