Natalie Merchant has new music to share in 2023. The enchanting singer-songwriter and industry veteran released a new single “Come On, Aphrodite” featuring Abena Koomson-Davis two weeks ago, and followed it up with the soul-infused “Tower of Babel” today. Merchant’s forthcoming album Keep Your Courage comes out on April 14th, and she’ll be performing at The Kimmel Center’s Miller Theater on April 21st.

“Tower of Babel” is accompanied by a stylish yet simple music video directed by Matthew Shattuck. The sparse set highlights Merchant’s lyrics and the emotion behind them. “See this house is divided / see we’re broken in two,” she sings over billowing horn arrangements by trombone player Steve Davis. Although she addresses themes of helplessness, and alludes to a kind of language barrier separating the poles of our political spectrum, Merchant’s rich charisma buoy “Tower of Babel” with prophetic hope.
