For some, a Sun Ra Arkestra concert on April 20th was the ideal way to spend the holiday. For others, every chance we get to see the legendarily cosmic music makers is a holiday. In Philly, we are blessed to be living with this legendary, world-class band right here in our neighborhood, gigging on the regular and taking the audience on transcendent journeys with them.

Riding high on the acclaimed Living Sky — number 14 in WXPN’s Best of 2022 MEGA LIST — last night’s performance found the Sun Ra Arkestra traveling the spaceways, and teeing up their next Philadelphia performance: a celebration for the 99th birthday of band leader Marshall Allen (as well as 109 years since Sun Ra’s arrival) on Saturday, May 27th. Find more on that show at WXPN’s Concerts and Events page and see pictures of last night’s performance below, care of WXPN contributing photographer Ellen Miller.
