Labor day weekend in Philadelphia means the Made In America festival, the annual hip-hop / EDM / pop festival curated by Jay-Z and Roc Nation. This year’s lineup is the most impressive its been in years, with superstars SZA and Lizzo headlining on September 2 and September 3. The former is riding high on the success of her sophomore album SOS and its infectious single “Kill Bill,” and also plays Philadelphia for a (rescheduled) sold-out concert at Wells Fargo Center on September 26; the latter delivered her fourth studio album Special last year, and it ranked number 19 on WXPN’s Best of 2022 MEGA LIST.
There’s a lot to love on the festival undercard as well, including crooner Miguel — who last played MIA in 2018 — beatmaking savant Metro Boomin — known as much for his DJ sets as his production with 21 Savage and The Weeknd, and more recently, his appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse — Ice Spice — the ascending New York City rapper whose lively charisma and star power is a force to be reckoned with — and Lil Yachty — whose psychedelia-tinged fifth album Let’s Start Here had many tastemakers re-evaluating what they thought they knew about this versatile rapper-turned-rock star.
The festival also includes appearances from MIA alums Tems, Coi Leray, a special collaborative appearance from Cam’ron and Mase, and more. Tickets are on sale now, more information can be found at the festival website.
