After a charming and confident live session on WXPN’s Indie Rock Hit Parade in May, Wednesday has been named our Artist To Watch for July of 2023.
The Asheville based 5-piece cycles through a range of genres, with some songs dipping into fuzzy noise rock fit for a battered 90’s skateboarder while others are perfect for a melodramatic window seat train ride home, complete with emotionally drained vocal cries and wobbly Americana guitar melodies. The band, fronted by vocalist and guitarist Karly Hartzman, have poured every ounce of themselves into the project since debuting in 2018. This commitment is immediately evident in their music: Without fail, Wednesday has released at least one album a year since 2020, with their most recent record, 2023’s Rat Saw God, being praised by fans and critics alike, earning an 8.8/10 on Pitchfork’s Best New Music chart.
The group sold out Union Transfer in support of Rat Saw God as part of their summer 2023 U.S tour, and performed like they were intimately familiar with every note each one played, as if the members could have switched instruments and not missed a beat. In Fall of 2023, Wednesday will embark on a U.K tour with stops in London, Paris, and Birmingham, and they’ll return to the area to play XPoNential Music Festival in September; passes available here.
