Pop-rock sensation Olivia Rodrigo formally announced her sophomore album GUTS this week across her various social media accounts. The album will be out Sept. 8, while the leadoff single “vampire” was released on June 30th.
“vampire” is abrasive and accusatory, playing into Rodrigo’s continued teen drama arc; it will be interesting to hear how the chorus’s two nearly-acapella curses are dealt with on the radio. The song the single is produced by Dan Nigro, who has production credits on the entirety of SOUR, and comes with a haunting Petra Collins-directed music video that finds her singing into a ribbon mic in a misty field.
Rodrigo began her venture into mainstream pop music with her 2021 single “drivers license,” which following its debut spent eight weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. Her album “SOUR” spawned three more Top 10 singles, including a second #1 hit “good 4 u”. Following the wild success of this album, Rodrigo set out on a large tour throughout North America and Europe, including two nights at The Met in Philadelphia last year.
The GUTS announcement comes about two years following the May 2021 release of SOUR, with the new album’s Instagram post already netting over four million likes. Fans had been speculating about an album since a post in late-May of 2023 where Rodrigo posed in front of a calendar with June 30 circled with a heart.
As of now, Rodrigo has not announced a tour in support of GUTS. Stay tuned into the singer’s social media accounts for updates on the upcoming album and tour as the rollout continues.
