Fusing psychedelic rock, soul, gospel, and jazz (with some Latin flavors too), today’s #TBTXPN artist, Sly and the Family Stone, brought the music world a step forward, funk.

While DJing at San Francisco’s KDIA through the 60s, Sylvester Stewart formed Sly and The Family Stone, one of the first mainstream interracial, mixed-gender bands. The band was inducted in to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 after receiving innumerable accolades. With such a distinct and, at the time, never before heard sound, Sly and the Family Stone went on to influence the likes of Miles Davis, Public Enemy, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Outkast and so many more.

Tune in on XPN.org throughout the day to hear their covers, hits, and more!
