The Beach Boys have regrouped for the first time in over a decade, organizing an all-inclusive recounting of their time together, featuring interviews from founding members Brian Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine, as well as longtime member Bruce Johnston. The 400-page book will also feature contributions from Thom Yorke of Radiohead, Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, and more. Previously unpublished pictures and band material will also be highlighted throughout the memoir, courtesy of Capitol Records’ extensive Beach Boys archive.
Lead songwriter and musical arranger Brian Wilson commented on the group’s work and the importance of The Beach Boys’ legacy: “There’s love in the music and people can relate to the love, regardless of whether you’re 2 years old or 92 years old. For me, music is about love. Love is the message I want to share. I hope people feel that in my music. That makes the hard work worth it.”
This latest book isn’t the first literary retelling of The Beach Boys’ time as kings of surf pop. In 2015, author Kent Crowley published Long Promised Road: Carl Wilson, Soul of the Beach Boys, the Biography, centered around the band’s co-founding tenor. Brian Wilson also has two memoirs, 1991’s Wouldn’t It Be Nice: My Own Story and 2016’s revised book I Am Brian Wilson.
