R.E.M. are often noted as being repsonsible for transforming the American underground and bringing bringing guitar pop back into the fold. They represented the idea of counterculture for so many and would continue to do so for 31 years. Before disbanding in 2011, they released 15 albums, won numerous Grammys, joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and left a legacy of era-defining music.
