A slow-burning force on the Philly rock scene, Broke Body is gearing up to release its next batch of new music, and this week in WXPN Studios, we got a taste of what’s in store for the band’s next chapter.

The Paranoid Particles EP last September made for a solid project-length introduction to Broke Body via a punchy set of five post-punk infused atmospheric rockers. But the stage is where the band has truly shone in the time since, and this power trio — singer-guitarist Jackie McLaughlin, bassist Davey Jones, drummer Nolee Morris — has shaped its sound into something as bracing as it is body-moving.

The new songs at the top of the band’s Key Studio Sessions set — “Things I Never Said,” “Flowers,” and the infectious “Birthday” — recall the high highs of the dance punk aughties, particularly bands like Bloc Party and The Rapture (and certainly the artists they drew inspiration from, like Wire and Gang of Four). Closing the set, Broke Body dipped back to 2019 and the very first single they released, “Cold Hands,” which is here reinvented from its dour lo-fi beginnings into a scorching anthem.

Watch the band’s full Key Studio Session below, catch their next live show at PhilaMOCA on Monday, August 28th with Shy Godwin, Dummy Pass, and Bussing — details at WXPN’s Concerts and Events page — and keep an eye on their Instagram for new of the big fall season they’ve got planned.
