Mountain Stage celebrates 40 years on the air
For 40 years, the public radio program Mountain Stage has brought live music to radios all over America.
- Judy Collins, "The Fallow Way"
- Tim & Mollie O'Brien, Kathy Mattea, "Twelve Gates"
- John Fullbright, "Stars"
- Joy Oladokun, "if you got a problem"
Produced by West Virginia Public Radio, it’s been instrumental (no pun intended) in the careers of many musicians who have performed on it — but maybe no musician has become a bigger part of the show than my guest today, Kathy Mattea.
In 2021, Kathy took over as the host of Mountain Stage, following the departure of the show’s original host, Larry Groce. But before that, she was a frequent guest and also a listener who grew up in West Virginia. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Mountain Stage, Kathy joins me to share some of her memories of the show as a listener, guest and now host, including some of her favorite performances, beginning with Judy Collins’ performance of “The Fallow Way.”
