Back in April, Thundercat and Tame Impala teamed up to release “No More Lies,” a groovy funk jam that hit the sweet spot between their two individual, complementary styles, blending Kevin Parker’s alternative psychedelic production with Thundercat’s laments of love, musing on a doomed relationship for which he takes responsibility. Now the duo have announced a limited edition 7’’ vinyl of the track, issued in a smooth cheetah print design.
While Thundercat had long ago earned his Michelin star for cooking on the bass, “No More Lies” proved that he’s just as capable when it comes to laying down catchy pop vocals. Standout lyrical gems are scattered throughout the track, including “I’m sorry, girl, didn’t mean to drag you in my dreams” and “But it’s not your fault, I’m just kind of ass.” The song even culminates in a candid monologue from the bassist questioning whether his sense of honesty is the best policy in a relationship: “I tell you the truth because I care, but I also lie to you because I care.”
The two artists’ collaboration was an electrifying and long-awaited union. Thundercat had wanted to work with Parker since his earliest days as a musician, saying “I’ve wanted to work with Kevin since the very first Tame Impala album. I feel that I knew that us working together would be special. I’ve been excited about this song for a long time and hope to create more with Kevin in the future.”
Thundercat kicks off the North American leg of his ‘In Yo’ Girl’s City’ Tour this Saturday at the Newport Jazz Festival. Other dates include an appearance at the Monterey Jazz Festival, a night at Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and The Anthem in Washington DC, but there are unfortunately no current Philly dates.
Meanwhile, Parker has recently been featured on a number of movie soundtracks. He wrote “Journey To The Real World” for Barbie, “Wings of Time” for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and joined the legendary Diana Ross for “Turn Up The Sunshine” on Minions: Rise of the Gru.
