Mannequin Pussy challenges tradition in their new single and music video. This is their first release since having debuted Romantic Records, a record label imprint started by the band following the reclamation of their masters from rock label Tiny Engines (you can read more on this here if you’d like a little more info on what this entails). Thus, the spirit of such rebellion has borne “I Got Heaven,” a testament to the freedom one is granted by not giving a damn about the limitations of social or political ideologies.
The music video starts off with a shot of a cow on a farm. This is neither here nor there, but it’s worth mentioning due to the fact that cows are awesome, and this music video is about 5% better for having one in it. With that being said, the members of the four-piece demonstrate their restlessness in various locations throughout the farm, including (but not limited to) frontwoman Marisa Dabice – sporting long, stunning, The Ring-esque hair, mind you – dancing in a corn maze and eventually – nakedly, too – yelling in a vast open field, tugging her hair as a means of getting her fervor across. The song itself is full of unapologetic statements of resentment and disgust, all through the lens of punk guitar tones, heavy drums, and lots of yelling punctuated by juxtaposing vocal harmonies.
“Heaven is here on a planet that gave us everything we needed to survive,” Dabice shares in a press release. “Heaven is in the plants and in the water and in the animals who we share this world with. Heaven is inside of me and inside of you.” The music video is indicative of this; despite attempts to be perfect, we are all just the same, yet different all the while, such that we should be able to coexist in peace and live life through love.
