Voting is underway for WXPN’s 2023 Fall Countdown: the 885 Greatest Songs By Women (As chosen by YOU). As the deadline approaches, Corinne Bailey Rae tells us why Nina Simone’s “Mississippi Goddam” is one of the greatest songs of all time.

“I love the way Nina Simone contrasts the subject matter of the song with her barreling musical-style piano. It rattles along, it has all this pace, but she’s putting across this very specific message of resistance and and and protest. She’s written so many great songs she’s been the singer of many more song, but I’d like for her to be recognized as a great artist and songwriter as well as a musician.”

Voting closes this Monday. Cast your vote before then for a chance to win two tickets to one WXPN welcomes concert per week in 2024. Tune in for countdown results starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, December 5th.
