Our February Artist to Watch is the rock five-piece Brigitte Calls Me Baby. Rooted in Chicago, Illinois, the band makes riveting, retro rock and roll music that feels calmly nostalgic yet eerily new. There’s an intriguing, shape-shifting allure to the band’s familiar yet fresh sound. In interviews, the band has listed a wide range of groups as influences including The Cars, The Strokes, Roy Orbinson, and Radiohead. Listening to the group, you can hear a lot of 50’s rockabilly – both in the easygoing, jangly instrumentals and the hypnotically smooth vocals of singer Wes Leavins – as well as some more recent rockers. Director Baz Luhrman took note of Leavins’ vocal talent and tapped the singer to record tracks for the recent Elvis biopic.
The group embarks on their first tour this month and will make their Philadelphia debut at World Cafe Live on February 15th. Get ready for the show by listening to their first EP, This House is Made of Corners.
