Caroline Polachek stems from a lineage of boundary-breaking genre-less alternative icons – think women such as Fiona Apple, Kate Bush, and Bjork. When you hear her albums or watch her reach high notes on Tiny Desk, it is clear she is writing new rules of subversive pop stardom. After performing as the frontwoman of the indie group Chairlift, she has established herself as a singular solo artist equally adept at collaborating with pop stars like Beyonce and Charli XCX.
Almost exactly a year ago, Polachek released Desire, I Want to Turn Into You to rave reviews and a rapturous reception from fans. On the one-year anniversary of the album — Valentine’s Day — she will release a deluxe version. It will include her latest single out today, a new version of “Butterfly Net” featuring a duet with Weyes Blood. “Dang” will also be included. Polachek premiered the track on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in October in a commanding performance which turned a power-point presentation into a statement of pop-star artistry. Last April, Polachek performed in Philly at the Franklin Music Hall. WXPN’s Paige Walter called the show “unbelievably powerful,” noting the star truly “stands out among pop artists for her world-building and the nuance she brings to the genre.”
