Dream-pop songstress Cassandra Jenkins is back with a new track, “Only One,” the first single from her upcoming album My Light, My Destroyer. Three years after the release of her last full-length, An Overview on Phenomenal Nature, Jenkins still has a knack for creating dreamy soundscapes.
While you may know her for her folk-influenced take on ambient pop, this new single is driven primarily by a mellow bed of synthesizers and a perfectly 80s drum groove. Her rootsy guitar playing is still present, but rather than driving the track as it typically does, it’s a compliment to this tapestry of both analog and digital sounds – and of course, the ethereal saxophone that made An Overview so special is here as well, dueting with a muted trumpet. It’s a new sound for Jenkins, but “Only One” still retains all the magic that’s made her one to watch.
Complimenting the nostalgic track is a beautiful music video directed by Lydia Fine & Tony Blahd, which stitches together sunburnt shots of Jenkins performing with moody shots of street signs, stop lights, advertisements, and other New York City ambiance. My Light, My Destroyer is Jenkins’ first album on Dead Oceans. It comes out on July 12th. Watch the video for “Only One” below.
