Where’d all the time go? Iconic Philly rock group Dr. Dog released their latest single “Tell Your Friends” early Wednesday morning. This track from their upcoming self-titled album has a more sweet than bitter nostalgia, with organic scratches, guitar slides, and a simple piano melody.
The single, following “Talk is Cheap” and “Still Can’t Believe,” has a platonic intimacy that’s an ode to getting older and the distance that comes with it, as well as the beauty of openly being affectionate with the boys. The group went with minimalism, and Eric Slick played guitar this time (instead of his usual drum set).
The official audio as posted to YouTube gives us two minutes of the band members chilling on the front porch of a small cabin. The upcoming LP was first recorded in that cabin in rural Pennsylvania on lead guitarist Scott McMicken’s 8-track tape to be finalized at the studio back home in Philadelphia.
“For this record there was an emphasis on creating something very soulful and live-feeling, which meant starting with all of us looking each other in the eye and connecting to the music,” said McMicken in a recent press release. “The idea was, ‘Let’s be loose, let’s not overthink.’ The more you can let go of that fear of being imperfect, the more you open yourself up to deeper expression.”
Their first album in six years, Dr. Dog, will be released July 19th. Dr. Dog is coming to the Mann Center July 13th – find more information and tickets via XPN’s Concert Calendar.
