Washington, D.C.’s favorite indie rocker Bartees Strange is shaping up to have a good year. Earlier in 2024, his new song “Big Glow” was featured on the soundtrack to A24’s I Saw The TV Glow. He also re-released their 2020 EP Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy (which is all Nationals covers) as a deluxe edition this past March.
His fifth single of the year, “Lie 95,” is another tearjerker – what else can we expect from Bartees? It’s got the stomping anguish of a good 80s ballad, but it’s an influence that Bartees doesn’t wear too strongly; the swirling electronic production feels decidedly modern, and Bartees’s soulful voice has always been so inimitable that it feels completely timeless. Like every Bartees Strange single, I’m only left wanting more – thankfully, they’ve been having a prolific year.
