Kim Deal dropped her first new solo single in ten years. Monday saw the release of “Coast”, a beachy track inspired both by memories of a trip to Nantucket and a cover of “Margaritaville”. It’s a bittersweet track, a refreshing antithesis to the takeover of Charli XCX’s “Brat summer.”
The frontwoman The Breeders and the original bassist of the Pixies, Deal has released several solo tracks over the course of her discography, including “Beautiful Moon” and “Wish I Was.” “Coast” features Deal’s twin (and her Breeders bandmate) Kelley on guitar and was recorded by Steve Albini, who passed May 7th. Though upbeat and peppered with horns, “Coast”’s lyrics are decidedly melancholy. “I’ve had a hard hard landing”, Deal opens. “I really should duck and roll out / of my life”.
The Breeders are opening a run of Los Angeles dates for Olivia Rodrigo; check out their tour dates here and listen to “Coast” below.
