The wait is over; synthpop duo Magdalena Bay has announced their second album, Imaginal Disk, and with it comes another fantastic single, “Image.” Earlier this year, the duo released “Death & Romance,” and followed it up with an extended music video directed by indie filmmaker Amanda Kramer that placed vocalist Mica Tenenbaum in the middle of some sort of psychedelic space fable.
The new single is a tighter pop song than “Death & Romance,” but the video is just as wild; this time around, Tenenbaum is going full Kate-Bush in some deconstructed waiting room, occasionally being abstracted by cheap visual effects or chased by a scary red guy, and yes, the video ends with said scary red guy strapping Tenenbaum to a table and preparing to give her the same sci-fi lobotomy that closed off the last Magdalena Bay video. The whole thing looks like if a tUnE-yArDs video was trying to kill you. I think the most fun part of my job is being XPN’s official-unofficial-Magdalena-Bay-film-critic.
Imaginal Disk comes out August 23rd; watch the video for “Image” below. And I really mean watch it. Don’t press play and look at it for a few seconds and then open another tab while you just listen to it. I know you do that sometimes. We all do. But you gotta actually watch this one. Trust me.
