In 2022, while the band was touring in support of their newest release, Low drummer and vocalist Mimi Parker passed away. Low wasn’t only still active, but still innovating; while Low was known in the 90s as being a defining slowcore band, their recent output, namely 2018’s Double Negative and 2021’s HEY WHAT were forward-thinking forays into noise, glitch, and ambient music.

When Low disbanded following Mimi’s passing, it stung just that much more knowing that the two clearly had much more to say. Two years on, Low guitarist and vocalist Alan Sparhawk has just announced his debut solo album, White Roses, My God, which comes out through Sub-Pop on September 27th. The newest single, “Can U Hear,” seems to pick up where Low left off, pushing further into modern sounds than anybody could’ve predicted. A skittering trap beat gives way into AutoTuned wailing that has more in common with the early work of 100 gecs or than it does with anything related to slowcore.

You can preorder White Roses, My God here – and if you’re still meditating on the impact that Low left on the world of indie rock, Philadelphia’s own Frances Quinlan recently starred in a reel on Headroom Studio’s Instagram where they spoke about how seeing Low live on the HEY WHAT tour’s Philly stop inspired their new song “Another Season,” particularly its guitar tone. The song was featured in the indie horror flick I Saw The TV Glow earlier this year; read a review of that album here.
