You might not have heard of fantasy of a broken heart yet – they still only have a handful of singles to their name – but they’ve worked with the likes of Sloppy Jane, Water From Your Eyes, and This is Lorelei, and in advance of their debut album Feats of Engineering, they’ve released a ridiculous new single, “Loss.”

Their past two singles, “AFV” and “Ur Heart Stops,” are fun little twee pop tracks with subtle influences from mid-century pop music – just subtle enough to still be cool. On “Loss,” fantasy of a broken heart is decidedly uncool; it’s a shamelessly jaunty romp through a bubblegum-pop chord progression that features both the angelic vocals of Bailey Wollowitz and the goofy zolo-y ramblings of Al Nardo.

“Pondering my bippy bops, boiling over all my thoughts, the steamy dreamies,” Nardo croons, shortly before breaking into a bridge that pairs shoegaze-y guitars with a synth line that sounds like a dead ringer for something off Songs from the Big Chair. This track is a veritable kaleidoscope of influences, and it’s only left me wanting more from these goofballs.

Feats of Engineering drops September 27th; tide yourself over with “Loss” below.
