If you’ve spent literally any time on TikTok lately, you’ve probably heard a charming little indietronica track set against a doting string sample and some thumping drum breaks; that would be TV Girl‘s “Lovers Rock,” which is maybe less known as a song and more known as a “sound.”
On their newest double-single, they’ve teamed up with none other than George Clanton, the unsung hero of 90s nostalgia and arguably the best artist to emerge from the vaporwave scene. “Summer 2000” is formed around a simple vocal sample from the obscure outsider-music girl group X-Cetra, which is a totally TV Girl move, but the rest of the song is pretty thoroughly George; massive acid house pianos that sound like they were lifted straight from a Screamadelica cut, meaty drum production that’s made for a nice bassy set of speakers, and of course, swirling layers of synth pads and lazy aa-ah-oohs from Clanton that float over the song like a cloud of, well, vapor.
The b-side, “Take a Trip,” is the comedown after party, a spacey trip-hop cut with a sampled rap hook that adds a Memphis-y flair to this 90s dreamscape. These are the perfect tracks to ride out the summer with.
