Angie McMahon is a master at creating soothing, anthemic, mantra-filled songs. Her sophomore album, Light, Dark, Light Again certainly proved that, and her recent releases “Just Like North” and “Untangling” continue to showcase her ability to write affirmation-filled music. In a world where inspirational messages in songs can feel forced or cheesy at times, McMahon’s writing is a breath of fresh air. Her whispers feel confessional and revelatory, growing into soaring notes of honesty and conviction.
According to McMahon, her latest release “Untangling” was a difficult track to finish. “It was written about someone who is deeply entwined in my life,” she shared, “so I never felt like either the song or the untangling itself was entirely finished.” The track comes with the news of an upcoming EP, Light Sides. The sister to her sophomore album, it features tracks that are part of the same universe, but never made it onto the finished album. Recorded around the world, the five tracks will officially close out the world of Light, Dark, Light Again, leaving McMahon free to start creating her next musical world.
Light Sides will be released on September 13 via AWAL. The Australian singer is currently back on tour, playing a couple of shows in the US before moving on to Europe. You can find all her dates here. Watch the lyric video for “Untangling” and find the tracklist for Light Sides below.
