With all due love to the Brat Summer of 2024, after a months of pop, it’s time for something grounding. That’s coming with Blondshell, née Sabrina Teitelbaum, who just dropped her first single since her 2023 self-titled debut.
“What’s Fair” tells a complex and truthful story within the riffs and wails of pop-punk sound. The lyric video is simple yet effective, with Teitelbaum in black and white with red or yellow lyrics, punctuated with illustrations within the lyrics. “I didn’t choose you, you chose me,” she says, and lets out the Blondshell scream.
“I think that any relationship between a mother and a daughter is inherently complicated,” Teitelbaum said in a recent statement. “Maybe it’s because of my own relationship, which was grounded in a lot of trauma and loss, but I think it’s always confusing. What are you allowed to expect, what is normal, what behavior from a parent is okay or not okay etc? And to what extent does ‘normal’ even matter when your experience is all you have. I was just trying to sift through the past when I wrote this song and I mostly had a lot of questions.”
Blondshell will be performing at the XPoNential Music Festival this September — earlier this year, she collaborated with fellow XPNFest artist Bully on a song called “Docket.” Tickets and more information available at xpnfest.org. Watch the lyric video for “What’s Fair” below.
