It’s only August, but the weather’s already dropping below 70. The streets of the University City are lined with free furniture, dirty mattresses and splintered dressers and half-functioning kitchen appliances. There’s an empty building on Market Street adorned with nothing more than the Spirit Halloween logo and a big sign that reads COMING SOON. Soon, we’ll see the leaves change colors, and as summer breaks into fall, I’ll be listening to “ana orint,” the new collaboration between Philly shoegazers They Are Gutting A Body Of Water and Atlanta indie rock band Sword II.
It’s the perfect soundtrack for a change of the seasons; Sword II’s sunburnt sound palette drives the first half of the track, making for a lazy poolside jam, but around the midpoint, the boom-bap drums turn to trap beats, and those instantly-recognizable TAGABOW guitars hit like a hailstorm. TAGABOW always shines when they bring other musicians into the fold – in March, they released “Krillin,” a collaborative single with Julia’s War labelmates Sun Organ and Philly’s best-kept-secret Greg Mendez – but this is one of their best collaborative efforts yet.
Listen to “ana orint” below.
