Sunday 8/25: CLOAKZ at Johnny Brenda’s
Come out to Johnny Brenda’s to celebrate the release of CLOAKZ’s debut album, Control Program! Originally started by Zac Ciangaclini as a solo project, the band’s lineup has evolved to include Tony Aqullino on bass, Greg Foran on drums, James Keary on guitar, and S. Catoe on keyboard. The self-described indie-rock-pop-gaze band will be joined by Two-Man Giant Squid, The Lunar Year, and Yawn Mower for the special Sunday night show. // 8 p.m., $15, 21+ – Emma Zoe Polyak
Monday 8/26: Nu School Collective at Solar Myth
Nu School Collective is an up-and-coming, shape-shifting Philly group blending influences from the current Philadelphia music scene. Curated by Kayla Childs, who you may know as Black Buttafly, the group relies heavily on the brilliance of its collaborators, which include Steve McKie on drums, Evan Lawrence on bass, Dai Miyazaki and Keyanna Hutchinson on guitar, and Jermaine Holmes and Redd Lavoe on vocals. The musicians come together in a jam-like state to create a kaleidoscopic sound. Tuesday 8/27: Incubus at Wells Fargo Center
It’s been 23 years since Californian alt-rock band Incubus released Morning View, and this Tuesday they’re coming to Wells Fargo Center to play it in its’ entirety. The 2001 album was pivotal to the band’s rise, and the recently released Morning View XXIII ushers the band into a renewed era of success while ensuring we can all shake our heads to “Wish You Were Here” for years to come. Tuesday 8/27: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard at Dell Music Center
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard just can’t slow down! Having recently released their 26th album, Flight b741, the Aussie band is warming up for an extensive run of shows. With songs ranging from theatrical to gritty, King Gizzard are never held back by the bounds of genre. Case in point – Flight b741, which follows their 2023 heavy metal concept album and takes on a nore nostalgic note, evoking the term “dad rock.” Philadelphia’s Dell Music Center welcomes the band this Tuesday, along with openers Geese. // 7:30 p.m., $74 and up (verified resale), AA – E.Z.P.
Wednesday 8/28: Tedeschi Trucks Band at The Mann Center
While Tedeschi Trucks Band involves no trucks, it does boast a twelve-piece ensemble, fronted by none other than husband/wife duo Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi. Their most recent album, I Am The Moon was an impressive two-hour-long feat. The blues and rock powerhouse (and XPoNential Festival alums) are bringing their sprawling songs to The Mann Center this Wednesday; get up and get groovy with the Tedeschi Trucks Band! // 6 p.m., $26 and up, AA – E.Z.P.
Thursday 8/29: Party Nerves at Kung Fu Necktie
The Philly-based band making “loud, dark and fast post-surf” are bringing a genre-defying set to Kung Fu Necktie. Party Nerves consists of three guys from three different countries coming together to create EPs like Put A Load On, Come Back Mangled, with more music coming this fall. Thursday 8/29: Sarah Jarosz at Upper Merion Township Park
WXPN welcomes four-time Grammy Award winner Sarah Jarosz to King of Prussia this Thursday! A member of supergroup I’m With Her, Jarosz has also released seven solo albums and is releasing brand-new singles like “Wildflowers In The Sky”, creating an ethereal sound that lingers long after the music stops. // 7 p.m., $30 and up, AA – M.Z.
Thursday 8/29: Daniel Donato at XL Live
Cosmic Country is coming to Harrisburg. Nashville guitarist and singer-songwriter Daniel Donato has built a sound that combines psychedelia and classic country, ‘60s Cali and Kentucky. His most recent album, Reflector, earned him praise from Rolling Stone and made him an Artist to Watch this past May. // 8 p.m., $25, 21+ – M.Z.
Thursday 8/29: Chaka Khan at Dell Music Center
A name synonymous with powerful vocals and hits that have reached every living generation, Chaka Khan is still on the road. Her iconic blend of funk, soul, and R&B has both garnered her fame and awards, but also has inspired new artists. And she’s not done yet. Khan worked with Sia and Bianca Costa on a new single this past May, and is coming to take over Philadelphia. // 7 p.m., $55 and up, AA – M.Z.
Friday 8/30: Usher at Wells Fargo Center
Usher has been and continues to be a R&B and pop powerhouse. After two decades cranking out hits like “Yeah!” he continues to bring it with Super Bowl appearances, the release of his latest LP, Coming Home, and his Past Present Future tour. Friday 8/30: Partygirl at MilkBoy
Don’t be fooled by the carefree name; partygirl’s music is made for anyone but. This is introspective stuff; somewhere between The Cranberries and Melissa Ethridge, but with a hell of a lot more saxophone. Joining them for a night of feminist alt-rock is Lazyacres, PANIK FLOWER, and emospacebird. // 7 p.m., $20.97, 21+ – Claire Brown
Saturday 8/31: Built To Spill at Asbury Lanes
Built to Spill plays at hybrid bowling-alley-concert-venue-diner Asbury Lanes this week, and they’re playing There’s Nothing Wrong With Love in its entirety to commemorate the album’s 30th. If you’ve ever wanted to Bowl a Split to Built to Spill, now’s your chance (I don’t know why you’d want to bowl a split, but this was the best pun I could come up with). Saturday 8/31: Bren at PhilaMOCA
Fresh off their Key Studio session at XPN, Philly pop-punker Bren brings their cathartic songbook to PhilaMOCA this week. Scranton songsmith James Barrett headlines this one; fellow Scrantonites (Scrantonians? I don’t know) Those Clever Foxes and NJ pop-punks LATEWAVES open. // 7:30 p.m., $14.93, AA – C.B.
Saturday 8/31: The Angies at Kung Fu Necktie
Thunderous drumming, menacing guitars, enraged vocals; The Angies are hardcore punk at its very best. They’re sharing the bill with scene peers Uncle Dan, who are celebrating the release of their new EP …Failed to Fade. Division-One and Bored as Hell open. // 6:30 p.m., $10, 21+ – C.B.
Saturday 8/31: Honeythunder at Johnny Brenda’s
Self-described “friendly punks” Honeythunder play a record release show this Saturday at Johnny Brenda’s. The group’s newest EP, TAILSPIN, comes out the day before, and if it’s anything like the singles, it’ll be a snappy set of indie rock to wake you up in the morning. Listen for a warmup performance by them on The Key Studio Sessions this week; anthemic indie rock band Caring Less and veena-based rockers Kulfi Girls open at JBs on Saturday. // 8 p.m., $12, 21+ – C.B.
