You might know Kim Deal as the bassist for Pixies, or the frontwoman of The Breeders, or the frontwoman of The Amps, or as a collaborator with everyone from Sonic Youth to Courtney Barnett. I mean, seriously, Deal’s wikipedia page looks like Ulysses.

An eternally busy artist with a prolific discography across multiple projects, you wouldn’t think it was still possible for her to surprise audiences nearly 40 years into her career, but that’s exactly what she’s doing with her debut solo full-length, Nobody Loves You More. Earlier this year, Deal released her first solo single in ten years, “Coast,” a slow indie rock tune with just the slightest hint of old-school country influence (be it Kim’s played-up drawl or the expressive brass section), and now she’s back with yet another single, “Crystal Breath.” It’s a spacey, almost krautrocky take on the kind of new wavey pop song they just don’t make anymore; faux-funky guitars and peppy refrains about “the beat” are abound. Does it make me wanna dance? Sure it does, but it really makes me wanna go to a roller rink, or whatever kids did in the 80s. Both tracks appear adjacent to each other on Nobody Loves You More, which comes out November 22nd on 4AD.

Accompanying this ephemerally-80s single is a trippy visualizer with some serious Max Headroom vibes: check it out below.
