It’s hard to believe that this is Tems’ first-ever world tour, but it’s true. Her Born in the Wild tour brought her to The Met this Tuesday, where she delivered a fun and high-energy set. With two EPs and an album full of hits under her belt, the Nigerian singer had a rich catalog of songs to choose from, opting to balance her hits with deep cuts from earlier releases. Her stage presence was that of a seasoned pro, as she connected with fans throughout the venue, dazzling the crowd.

Fans who showed up early were treated to a captivating set from Dutch singer-songwriter Naomi Sharon. Her cozy and intimate performance immediately drew the audience in, with her smooth and powerful vocals taking center stage. Between songs, Sharon offered words of affirmation and shared personal stories about her 2023 debut album, Obsidian. “It’s a work about vulnerability and heartbreak,” she said, “Even though you don’t feel positive, there’s always hope.” Judging by the cheers that filled The Met, Sharon’s message clearly resonated.

When it was time for Tems, the stage was transformed into grassy plains, setting the scene for her dynamic entrance to a roaring crowd. Without missing a beat, she launched into her set, blending afrobeats, pop, and R&B with the support of a live band and backup singers. Tems’ energy was infectious, lighting up the stage as she danced, twirled, and sparkled—literally covered in glitter.

At one point, Tems jumped down into the crowd, calling out fans whose enthusiasm could be felt on stage. Tems took the time to engage with multiple fans, asking them their names and complimenting them. While some got to show off their knowledge of her songs by singing verses, others were serenaded by Tems, who freestyled and improvised lyrics with their names. It was an intimate and interactive moment that left a lasting impression.

Tems’ setlist was packed with hits, including “Love Me JeJe” and “Me & U” from her debut album, Born in the Wild. Although the album was only released in June, the crowd knew every word, singing along passionately. She closed the night with her self-care anthem “Free Mind” from For Broken Ears, leaving the audience with a message of peace and goodwill.

“This is my first time in Philly and I’m having such a great time,” confessed Tems during her set. Safe to say, Philly felt the same way.
