Ginger Root, the alternative/indie rock group, play with some of the most diverse and unique styles I’ve ever seen. The group, led by Cameron Lew, use a variety of instruments, sounds, equipment, and technology to achieve beautiful work. Lew uses two microphones, one which is a regular mic, and another that is actually a souped-up telephone used as a voice changer.

The group performed a total of eight songs, seven of which are on their newest album, Shinbangumi. Instead of a song, they started the concert with a short video, providing a theme on the Japanese TV and music industry. After the short video, they began to play, starting with one of their top songs, “Better Than Monday.” Lew began this song on the electric keyboard, singing into one mic, and then switching to the other. By doing this, he distorted his the vocals, creating an eccentric and unique sound.

Alongside Lew are three other band members, the drummer, the lead guitarist and a cameraman. Together, they create an incredibly talented and distinct form of music. The cameraman, dancing around the stage capturing the live performance, caught points of view that the regular eye never got to see, from Lew’s fingers on the keyboard or guitar, to the drummer’s smooth rhythm that’s maintained throughout the show.

After playing a few songs from the setlist, Lew showed his sense humor, speaking to the crowd, cracking a couple jokes. However, it’s right back to business as they hop into the second half of the setlist with a song called “No Problems.” The song’s usage of various machines and instruments creates an incredible sound for the audience, causing everyone at World Cafe to rock their heads to the beat and get as excited as Lew and the band.

Ginger Root has seven studio albums, three EP’s, and 19 singles together. Despite a diverse and lengthy discography, the band is not looking to stop anytime soon. As they continue their tour, they plan to create more unforgettable concerts for their fans. Their tour continues with a show at Union Transfer in Philadelphia tonight, followed up by concerts in Washington D.C. and Atlanta.
