Black Music City, now in its fifth year, stands as the largest grant opportunity for Black creatives in the Philadelphia region. With $125,000 in funding available, this program continues to empower Black artists and cultural creators while celebrating the rich legacy of Philadelphia’s Black music heritage. This year, Black Music City welcomes new collaborations with StoryCorps, which helps document meaningful stories, and the African American Museum in Philadelphia, a leader in preserving and showcasing Black culture.

Since its launch, Black Music City has awarded over $500,000 to more than 120 Black creatives, providing a vital platform to amplify their voices and celebrate Philadelphia’s unparalleled contributions to Black music.

What Projects Qualify?

Eligible projects celebrate Philadelphia’s Black music history by honoring artists, musical styles, venues, or movements that have shaped the city’s vibrant music scene. Projects should authentically connect with this legacy and uplift its impact creatively.

Who Should Apply?

The program is open to Black artists and cultural creators aged 18 and older, living or working in the Philadelphia Metro area, South Jersey, or Delaware. Artists across all mediums are invited to submit project ideas, with grants of $1,500, $3,000, or $5,000 available to help bring their visions to life.

Application Timeline:

  • Applications Close: February 3, 2025
  • Grantees Announced: March 2025
  • Projects Due: May 31, 2025
  • Celebration Event: June 19, 2025

Judging Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on:

  • Storytelling & Theme: Resonating with Philadelphia’s Black music heritage.
  • Creativity: Highlighting originality and fresh perspectives.
  • Personal Impact: Demonstrating meaningful connections to Philly’s communities and culture.
  • Past Work/Experience: Showcasing the applicant’s ability to bring the project to life.
