Joining us for this Indie Rock Hit Parade live session is a group whose return to our studio serves as a reinvention and reintroduction. When we first met Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart in 2018, they went by Ohmme, and even that wasn’t the first incarnation of the duo’s Chicago-based art-pop project. After the release of 2020’s Fantasize Your Ghost (and an accompanying home-recorded IRHP performance), Cunningham and Stewart’s band reached the next stage of its ongoing evolution. This year, the newly mined Finom released the full-length Not God, produced by longtime admirer Jeff Tweedy.
Along with new songs, Cunningham and Stewart brought new bandmates to this session: Chicago mainstays VV Lightbody and Spencer Tweedy round out the lineup on bass and drums, respectively. Those new songs showcase all the sharpest tools in Finom’s arsenal: Fluttering harmonies, droning violin, locked-in rhythms, and dueling guitar workouts give the set a propulsive momentum.
