With a decade on the scene under his belt, Philly rapper The Bul Bey continues to rock crowds and built community. His newest project, an EP called Depth Before Height, is a testament to this as it breaks down relationships, friendships, and one’s place in their city and the world, all to an array of body-moving beats.
This week for The Key Studio Sessions, Bey and his live band play three songs from the project live in WXPN’s performance space: the energized “Elbow Deep,” the smooth and short slow jam “Romantic,” and the vibrant and reflective “Pass The Salt.” In between songs, Bey chats with WXPN host Abdur Rahman about bringing dance energy back to hip-hop, drawing on childhood memories for lyrical and sonic inspiration, and the collaborative nature of Philadelphia’s music community, which Bey describes as “incredible vibrant people on the edge of creativity.”
