Wednesday 2/5: Kahil El’Zabar’s Ethnic Heritage Ensemble at Solar Myth

The cozy and cool South Philly spot Solar Myth is a great place to immerse yourself in boundary-pushing music. Active since the mid-70s, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble led by percussionist and composer Kahil El’Zabar can present music that’s on the far reaches of creative improvisation, and it can also interpret songs you love in a way you’ve never heard before. Their latest LP, Open Me, A Higher Consciousness of Sound and Spirit, came out a year ago and combines original pieces with unique spins on Roberta Flack’s “Compared To What” and Miles Davis’ “All Blues.” El’Zabar settles into Solar Myth for two gigs this week; one on Wednesday, and another on Thursday. // 8 p.m., $37.08, 21+ – J.V.

Looking for a laugh? Well this might not be a comedy club, but Tim Heidecker, the comedian, songwriter and performer arrives and will be playing with The Very Good Band at Union Transfer. Heidecker is a charismatic and funny performer, as Waxahatchee fans saw at The Fillmore last year, but his music is more meaningful than joke-y, as last year’s Slipping Away showed. // 8 p.m., $40 and up, AA – J.C.

Saturday 2/8: Matt Pond PA at Johnny Brenda’s

A long-running purveyor of sweeping and introspective indie rock, Matt Pond PA returns to the state that lent the band its name this Saturday for a headlining gig at Johnny Brenda’s. Over the years, Pond and his bandmates have earnestly covered blockbuster rock songs by Oasis and My Chemical Romance, contributed his own music to the indie canon (“Halloween,” “Fairlee” and “Love To Get Used” are essential listening), and relentlessly released music. Their 17th (we think) studio album, The Ballad Of The Natural Lines, comes out Friday, just in time for a bunch of listens before MPPA returns to the JBs stage. // 8 p.m., $20, 21+
