From the lush, baroque “Orlando In Love” to the guitar-driven, rock thumper “Mega Circuit,” Japanese Breakfast shows off a new side of the forthcoming album For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) today. The new single also gets a visual: a lo-fi music video of songwriter Michelle Zauner tromping around the woods, hunting with the bros, and hopping on and off ATVs. “[‘Mega Circuit’] is sort of an examination of contemporary masculinity, and explores a conflicted desire to embrace a generation that in the absence of positive role models has found refuge in violence and bigotry.”

Japanese Breakfast expands the world of ‘For Melancholy Brunettes’ with new shuffling single
The new song “is sort of an examination of contemporary masculinity” says Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner.
For Melancholy Brunettes, due out March 21st via Dead Oceans, follows a cultural breakthrough for Japanese Breakfast on the success of ’21’s Jubilee and her NYT bestselling book Crying In H Mart. “I felt seduced by getting what I always wanted,” says Zauner. “I was flying too close to the sun, and I realized if I kept going I was going to die.” So where does she go from there? Brunettes sees Zauner flex her well-earned credibility, with production from Grammy Award winner Blake Mills (“quietly regarded as many a legacy artist’s favorite guitar player”), and engineering at Sound City (After The Gold Rush, Fleetwood Mac, Nevermind). “Mega Circuit” even features legacy session drummer Jim Keltner, who has played for three former Beatles (all but McCartney).
With the release of “Mega Circuit” also comes new tour dates for Japanese Breakfast. They play Philly’s The Met two nights on May 15th and 16th. Get your tickets at the WXPN Concerts and Events page.
