March is Women’s History Month and March 8th, is International Women’s Day. On WXPN, we’re celebrating with an array of femme-forward programming this week, leading into 24 hours of our favorite women in music all day Saturday.
The on-air celebration begins on Friday at 9 a.m. with a community-curated playlist on the Friday Morning Mixtape highlighting women as band leaders and solo artists. At 4 p.m., Dan Reed presents a woman-centric edition of Funky Friday, followed by DJ Robert Drake’s annual Ladies Of The 80s special on Land Of The Lost, and a showcase of women in 90s music on What’s The Frequency.
On Saturday, March 8th, the all-women playlist begins at midnight with Abdur Rahman at midnight and carries through Sleepy Hollow from 6 to 10 a.m. At 10, Amber Miller hosts a playback of women featured in the 2024 885 Greatest Songs of the 21st Century countdown. Wendy Rollins is on from 2 to 6 p.m., musician and writer Palmyra Delran guest hosts The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn from 6 to 7, and Jonny Meister highlights women in blues music on The Blues Show beginning at 7.
And there’s bonus content online, too! Thoroughout the week, World Cafe will share daily posts and playlists covering the past century of women in music, each one spotlighting a generation-defining artist from the 1920s to present; the deep dives will break further down into artists that inspired them and their music as well as the artists they in turn inspired. And lastly, check out a specially-curated video playlist of some of our favorite women artists who have lived and worked in Philadelphia, featuring Tierra Whack, Japanese Breakfast, Waxahatchee, and many more.
