Euphoria Again: Full Set (The Key Studio Sessions)

There are a few places you might have encountered singer-guitarist John Klein around the Philly music scene. He’s responsible for the arcing bottleneck slide leads that create the Mazzy Star-esque backbone of local shoegaze outfit Knifeplay. He’s also one of many shredders in Friends Of Jerry, a popular Grateful Dead worship band starring an array of names from the local indie scene.

And then there’s Euphoria Again, a project that for Klein is his most personal. Taking cues from the other projects he plays in, and funneling them into a rugged roots rock pastiche in the vein of Crazy Horse and M.J. Lenderman, Euphoria Again’s haunting music reflects on life and death, love and human connection, all set to a robust band backing.

Last fall, Euphoria Again released its latest album, Waiting On Time To Fly, via Born Losers Record, and the band joins us this week in WXPN’s performance space for a Key Studio Session showcasing the record. Backed by guitarist / keyboardist and vocalist Johanna Baumann — who also mixed the session recordings — and drummer Joey Ginaldi, guitarist Evan King, bassist Max Black, and pedal stell player Miles Coulahan, Klein showcases the moods of Euphoria Again, from simmering (“If An Angel Were A Ghost,” “White Light And Wind”) to explosive (“Sky Remembers,” “One More Time”).

Watch the performance in the player above, check out photos from the set below, and pick up Waiting On Time To Fly here, via Born Losers Records. For more, see Euphoria Again live at Port Richmond’s Foto Club this Friday, April 18th; tickets and more information can be found at WXPN’s Concert Calendar.
