Philadelphia power-pop / indie rock four-piece Hurry are longtime local favorites here at WXPN, and it was a treat to not only have them on the bill of February’s Homegrown Live concert, but to hear them road-test a batch of new songs at the show.
With the shimmering “Something More” from last year’s Don’t Look Back at one end of the set and the band’s first single “Oh Whitney” at the other end, Hurry — comprised of singer-guitarist Matt Scottoline, bassist Joe DeCarolis, drummer Rob DeCarolis, and guitarist Justin Fox — gave fans at World Cafe Live a first listen to four tracks from their next project while playfully bantering with the crowd, the staff, and one another. The new songs firmly fit in the Hurry wheelhouse, with some unexpected flourishes (left-of-center chord changes, ripping guitar solos by Fox) and lyrics balancing weary cynicism with warm hope and good humor.
Watch Hurry’s Homegrown Live set in the player above; you can also check out performances from the same night by Madska and Queen of Jeans. For more from Hurry, head to Nikki Lopez on South Street on Saturday, May 10th, where Scottoline will be playing a solo set to open for the last Philadelphia concert by Worriers; the next full-band gig from Hurry happens Saturday, May 31st in the Music Hall of World Cafe Live, when they’ll open for Heartless Bastards. Tickets and information on both can be found at WXPN’s Concert Calendar.
