Sunday (1994)

It’s EP release day for Sunday (1994), and for the final Free At Noon concert of NON-COMM, the the rising Los Angeles four-piece gave radio pros and local fans short but impactful showcase of the new project Devotion. Out on Arista Records, it hits on a lot of sonic touchpoints — the jangle-pop of Alvvays, the blockbuster rock of Paramore, the emotive balladry of Taylor Swift (in particular the atmospherics of her album The Tortured Poets Department). Lead vocalist Paige Turner was cool and charismatic, and the three-song set found a centerpiece in the roof-raising “Still Blue.”

David Shaw

The annual NON-COMMvention came to a close with a rousing performance by Louisiana singer-songwriter David Shaw. Best known as the frontperson of the anthemic alt-pop combo The Revivalists, Shaw’s solo work finds him more in reflective troubadour mode — but with no shortage of big-bang pop hooks and a goal of bringing the room together for a shared experience. Shaw’s second solo album, Take A Look Outside, is out now.
