With uncertainty in the wake of Congress voting to defund public media, stations around the country are looking for ways to make up for lost revenue. For their part, the stylish Los Angeles singer-songwriter duo Lucius are helping out by releasing their 2025 World Cafe session for Bandcamp Friday, and donating the proceeds to WXPN.

Bandcamp Friday is an initiative the music platform launched during the pandemic where periodically, on the first Friday of a designated month, its service fees (15% on digital items, 10% on physical merch) are waived — meaning when a fan makes a purchase, that money goes to the artist in full. It became a way for music fans to rally around independent artists they loved, and in turn, many artists paid it forward by using their Bandcamp Friday sales to support nonprofits near and dear to their heart.

That’s exactly what Lucius is doing.

In a statement delivered as a band, Lucius’ Holly Laessig, Jess Wolfe, Danny Molad, and Pete Lalish said they are choosing to support WXPN with their release because “Public radio is our home for sharing information, journalism, art and ideas, and public access to this is essential; it’s time to show up now more than ever.

“We’re proud to support the incredible work of World Cafe and XPN, whose thoughtful, time-intensive approach makes each session a unique experience. Their commitment to capturing the heart of what musicians are creating—authentically and with care—continues to be an essential part of the musical landscape.”

WXPN’s Bruce Warren said “We first heard Holly and Jess back when Wildewoman came out, and we were immediately smitten by their sound. The harmonies (of course), the punchy and infectious melodies — their songs jumped out of the radio. As a fan, I felt they had a fully formed, unique sound that was unmistakably Lucius.

“Now, here we are some 10+ years later with their wonderful new self-titled album, and the same still holds true. Lucius continues to matter — for their super powerful harmonies, their fun, energetic, and captivating live shows, and their remarkable ability to blend strong pop instincts with indie and artsy sensibilities.”

Lucius notes that this session, released last month, is the band’s fourth World Cafe session…”and like each one before it, is completely unique—shaped by time, care, and a deep respect for the music. We love how this one sounds.”

The project is a pay-what-you-can download for Bandcamp Friday and through the weekend, and Lucius is donating 100% of the proceeds to WXPN; you can support it today by going here.
