Valerie June
Where They’re From:
Humboldt, Tennessee
Who They Are:
Self-taught musician, singer and songwriter from small-town Humboldt, Tennessee, Valerie June is a force to be reckoned with. She creates a stunningly emotive concoction of blues, folk, gospel, soul, Appalachian, and bluegrass that channels the classic American roots music of days gone by. With so many traditional influences mixed with the modern flair of her young age, and with the aid of album producers Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and Kevin Augunas of Florence & The Machine, Valerie June’s debut album Pushin’ Against A Stone made for an instant classic. She was an XPN Artist To Watch in July of 2013, the year the album was released, and followed it up with subsequent and increasingly more dynamic releases like 2017’s The Order of Time and 2021’s The Moon and Stars: Prescriptions for Dreamers.
