Watch Philly power pop band Benny P play live at WXPN Studios
The West Philly jangle-popsters show off the infectious melodies and upbeat energy of their debut album ‘No Place’ in this instudio session.
In the eternal continuum of indie power pop, from Big Star to Teenage Fanclub to Nada Surf and Hurry, West Philly newcomers Benny P fit right in.
Led by singer-guitarist and songwriter Ben Polito, the band first caught my ear in an extremely upbeat set last year at the Delco free concert series Open Sound Lansdowne. This led me to the delightful single “Some Days,” and then to the album No Place, which was released in October.
On the album, Polito does it all — all the arrangements, all the vocals and harmonies — and recorded it over the previous several years. In the year since, he’s built up Benny P the band into a high-energy four-piece with Jack Alexander joining him on guitar, Caleb Rushton on bass, and Nate Walters on drums.
The short and sweet set packs three songs in just over ten minutes — the opening trio of songs on the album, as it happens, “Some Days,” “Morning,” and “Can You Tell Me” — and watching it will get you out of your mid-week funk and bopping around whatever room you currently occupy.
Benny P’s next gig is on their home turf in West Philly, Upstairs at Abyssinia on 45th and Locust on October 4th, with Philly’s Log Flume and Portland’s Cruise Control. More at their respective Instagrams, @upstairsabyss and @bennypmusic.
