Abdur Rahman
Thursday Evening & Sunday Afternoon Mix
I’m a military kid, I was born in Washington DC, moved to Puerto Rico then to a military base in south New Jersey called Ft. Dix. When my mother retired after serving 20 years in the navy we moved to Upper Darby when I was 13 and that’s where my love for radio grew.
Before going to school I would wake up in the morning listening to Monie Love, Pooch Man, and Laiya St. Clair on 100.3 Da Beat. Whenever DJs like Cosmic Kev, DJ Touch Tone, or Doc B were spinning I would always try to record the songs using record tapes to create my own mixtapes. By the time I was a senior in high school, I already knew I wanted a career as a radio personality, which explains why that was the topic for my senior project.
My first shot at radio started as an intern for Clear Channel in 2012, shadowing radio personalities such as Mina Say What, Eddie F, Doc B, and others. When I went to Temple University in 2013 I spent time working at their radio station WHIP as a personality and board operator. 2014 I started my journey with WXPN as a music blogger intern working under John Vettese. In 2017 I became a contributing writer for WXPN’s blog The Key covering local music artists and events in the Philadelphia region and three years later to my surprise I became a radio announcer!
Whenever listeners hear me on air I want them to hear or sense my love for music and that I’m very big on supporting music from local acts. My biggest goal is to help Philly radio sound like Philly and document the stories of the next generation of artists coming from this city.
