Wendy Rollins
Weekends
“Wendy, what do you do other than radio?”
I still have a hard time answering that question.
I made my first radio tape when I was 10. I was the host and the callers. I did giveaways…to myself. I carefully selected the songs and had to borrow a few from my brother. A full hour of radio magic.
I was interested in a lot of things as a kid but I always came back to radio. Growing up in Atlanta I diligently recorded my favorite radio station, mimicking the jocks, and studying their every move.
Once I got into college I made an attempt to get a “real career” but once I found out the radio station I had spent so much time listening to was run by a woman, I literally changed colleges, changed majors, and was on the campus radio station within a week. Over 20 years later I have worked in Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, have been heard nationwide from Alaska to Florida, but the majority of my career is rooted in Philadelphia.
Radio has always been the thing that connects it all for me. I am constantly listening to music and going to shows, looking for something new. Radio allows me to share music.
One of my favorite things is when someone tells me at a show “I heard you play this band and now I’m here!” I love being the link between the artist and the fan and I love seeing a band get the attention they deserve.
But if I was pressed to answer the original question…travel as much as possible, learn about other cultures, work with animal rescues, add more to my garden, and eat all the pastries.
